The most beautiful place in Europe // Positano, Italy
I found it. I found the MOST beautiful place in all of Europe. I’ve searched high and low and this place takes the cake as being the most scenic place I’ve ever seen.
While in Naples a few weeks ago I hopped down to the Almalfi Coast (about an hour drive) for sightseeing and a meal. I’d visited Sorrento before, which IS wonderful but Positano is a gem all it’s own. The water is a vibrant blue, the mountains rising high above are striking, the town itself has best of Italian charm. It’s UNESCO preserved and carved straight out of dream.
Taking the uber-scenic Almalfi Coast drive (noted as one of National Geographic’s ‘Drives of a Lifetime’) we arrived at the top of the town and promptly parked. The beach and town center were faaaar below, separated from us by about a zillion steps.
In search of a map, we stepped in to Hotel Villa Franca to chat with the receptionist. Snooping around the lobby, I was quite sure I had found the ultimate honeymooners hotel. I can’t speak on the rooms, but the common areas are SPECTACULAR.
Taking in the views from the hotel balcony, I was eager to continue further into the town. Of course, going down steps is always easy, but when a beautiful beach lies ahead, you’ll find yourself attempting to take steps two at a time. (poor choice)
Catching glimpse of the town and coast below, I couldn’t stop mumbling “wow….wow…” as I was snapped away. But really – holy mackerel – is this place not insane?
Unaware at the time, the next three pictures provide a nice little vertical panorama. I’d love to be lounging on that beach right about meow.
The coast-mountain duo is hard to reckon with, both directions provide an overwhelming sense of amazement. Toss in the charming city into the mix and I’m at a loss for adjectives.
Finally we arrived into town and it dawned on me that this is likely the most beautiful town I’ve ever been in – ever. I beg you, put Positano at the tip-top of your wanderlust list. It’s just incredible. Perhaps for a honeymoon, romantic getaway, or a holiday with friends?
