Lucerne, Switzerland in a Nutshell (+ vlog!)
Put it on your list: Lucerne, Switzerland.
I was absolutely wowed during my visit – so clean, charming, and incredibly scenic! The town along crystal clear Lake Lucerne is dazzling and the surrounding Alps put the icing on the cake in terms of not only views but endless outdoor activities.
EAT
Alpermagronen – Comparable to mac and cheese but with the added flair of oozing Guyere cheese. Often served with a side of apple sauce!
Raclette – Small grills are placed tabletop to maintain a nice molten consistency for the raclette cheese. Similar to Guyere, it’s a bit nutty but wonderful when paired with veggies, bread and potato skins.
Rosti – A potato dish somewhat comparable to a flatten hashbrown served with bacon, onion, and cheese.
DO
Explore Lucern’s Old Town – walk along the water, visit the famous Lion monument, walk the Kappelbrucke and enjoy views from the medieval wall, all of which are in close proximity.
Hike nearby Rigi Mountain – an easy and efficient way to enjoy a day in the Alps! Dial up Rene from ECHO Trails for a great guide!
Ferry across Lake Lucerne – ferry boats depart regularly from near bus station and provide not only transportation across the lake but are a fun experience in themselves.
Hop the Stanserhorn Cabrio Cable Car – the world’s only open top double-decker (!!) cable car flies up the mighty Stanserhorn providing stunning views and a great restaurant on top!
Other suggestions: Verkehrshaus Museum (Highly acclaimed museum of Swiss Transport), Cogwheel train up Mount Pilatus, Stroll the Saturday market
STAY
Hotel Des Balances – I absolutely LOVED my stay and gushed all about it here. Located right on the river with an amazing breakfast included, not sure what else you could want!
