Finally. We made it to Annecy. (happy dance!)
A few weekends ago Dan and I scribbled off a bucket list destination I’ve been absolutely dying to see for years. Way back in 2011, which now seems like forever ago, Dan’s parents gave me a Rick Steve’s guide to France, knowing how much I loved the country. While perusing through, I found a section highlighting the village of Annecy. In a nutshell: set on the cleanest lake in Europe beside the peaks of the French Alps lies a charming historic village. I had to go.

Upon arrival we dropped our things and scooted down to the lakefront. Tourists and locals milled along the beautiful boardwalk while others napped in the shade of the park at the water’s edge. Although Annecy is a popular Pinterest pin, I was delighted by how authentic the village and lake felt. With limited tour groups mobbing the streets, instead Annecy is a destination for the Swiss and French to spend their leisure time. In my book this is a huge win.

To get our bearings on the area we hopped aboard one of the large ferries docked just outside of the village. For 18E pp the ferry made a 2 1/2 hour circuit stopping at 5 villages along the shore. The hop-on/hop-off tour allowed for us to explore the gorgeous little village of Tallories (very picturesque post to come) for 2 hours then hop aboard the following ferry, making for a positively pleasant day on the water.

Looking back at darling Annecy as we chugged out of the harbor:

On our way to our first stop at Veyrier du Lac, we passed a gorgeous little regatta. I had attempted to rent a sailboat during our stay but unfortunately a french sailing membership was required. Next time, right?

High above the village of Menthon Saint Bernard sits the Castle of Menthon Saint-Bernard. Tours are available daily and rumor has it the views are spectacular (not at all surprising).

En route we puttered slowly by this stunning private chateau. A real private residence that I think both you and I deserve! In DC our apartment was 600 square feet so the thought of calling this place home… I can’t.

Always the popular guy, our sweet Stuart was a favorite with others aboard. Some dogs love water, he loves his people and sunshine. A few hours basking in the sun on Dan’s lap and he is a sedate little fluff ball.

Alas, back to sweet Annecy.

The remainder of our evening entailed a big hunk of fresh Brie, a steaming baguette, and a bottle of local red wine for a grand total of 9E. This is how you enjoy France – don’t overpay for a cliche cup of French Onion soup or plate of escargo (according to our Parisian tour guide, the French actually don’t like either of these dishes), just got to the grocery store and dive in!
