An Evening in Taormina, Sicily

An Evening in Taormina, Sicily

I like to think of Sicily as mainland Italy’s cool, laid-back, little sister. She’s somewhat off the map, has a killer cuisine, gorgeous coastline and a (relatively) relaxed, islander attitude. Taormina, one of the many gems littered across the island, attracts it’s share of the tourism industry but has an unforgettable Sicilian flare.
Taromina lies just an hour from the large coastal city of Catania and could easily occupy a visitor for a few days of hiking, beach-going and exploring the village. Our visit started with a tour of the Teatro Antico di Taormina. One of the most celebrated ruins in Sicily, the amphitheater was built early in the 7th century BC (!). Mount Etna lying not far in the distance, stunning views of the Sicilian coast, dangled olive trees, ancient Roman ruins, and, to our delight, a youth orchestra playing classics during out visit, all made for quite an experience.

After an hour of exploring around the amphitheater we strolled back into the village for more meandering. With the buildings draped with warm, dreamy, tones while the evening sun quietly set, I was sure that I was wandering around inside of a postcard.

Akin to my experience in Positano, Taormina is incredibly picturesque, smiling pretty for every single picture, even those dreaded up-shots (no double chin here!).

That night we found a table at a local dive with our hearts set firmly on seafood.

Thirty minutes into our feast bottles of wine and olive oil littered the table along with baskets of warm crusty bread and a spectacular assortment of seafood. One plate arriving after another- salmon, oysters, scallops, octopus, mussels, shrimp, clams (oh the clams!), and sea bass. Each dish brimming with tastiness, each unique flavor working harmoniously with the others.

We ate, sipped and ate some more, slowly working our way into a divine salty seafood coma.

And finally, after a long leisurely meal (so Italian of us) our last course arrived. A smooth, sweet serving of creme brulee.
No worries, I managed to find room.
No more than an hour after paying the bill (I found Sicily to be cheaper than the mainland) I was fast asleep in a saltwater slumber.

Think you’d enjoy an evening in Taormina? I think you would!
