5 Delightful Day Trips from Frankfurt

Heading to Europe? Chances are high that you’ll have a layover in Frankfurt since it’s Europe’s third busiest airport. Instead of jetting off immediately, consider lingering in Frankfurt for a night or two and explore some of Germany’s most beautiful sights within close proximity.

Here are 5 delightful day trips from Frankfurt (Airport):

1 | Cochem, Moselle Valley – Steep vineyards, the picturesque Mosel River, and charming villages. Many travelers adore the Moselle Valley (especially Rick Steves) for it’s peaceful pace and storybook setting. While there, make time to explore Cochem and the darling village of Beilstein.

2 | Sankt Goar, Rhine Valley – The scenic UNESCO World Heritage region of the Middle Rhine Valley never disappoints. Grab bikes from the tourist office in Bingen and pedal down the infamous Rhine River towards the idyllic village of Sankt Goar.  Along the way you’ll pass a plethora of castles, cobbled villages and sweeping views. Afterwards take the ferry back to Bingen, sitting on the roof deck with a glass of wine watching the views unfold all over again.

3 | Heidelberg – My gorgeous little hometown, you’ll undoubtedly love it just as much as I do. Stroll the Neckarweisen park along the Neckar River, take in spectacular views of the city along the Philosphenweg, slurp libations at our favorite breweries Vetter & Kulturbrauerei, and explore the massive Heidelberg Castle.

4 | Bad Durkheim, Rheinland Pfalz – Spring through Fall this wine growing region is bursting with celebrations. Culinary and wine walks, almond blossom festivals, and too many wine festivals to count. Check out this site for information on what is going on.

5 | Rothenburg ob de Tauber – Frequently referenced as the most charming village in all of Germany, Rothenburg is an absolute delight. As though you’re stepping back into a German fairytale, the old walled city is packed with cross timbers and cobbles. During the winter the village turns into the closest thing to the North Pole with a world-renowned Christmas Market, the town is decorated head to toe for the holidays.
